Lenka Morávková takes audiences on a multisensory journey with a one-of-a-kind glass sound sculpture, the Bohemian Cristal Instrument (inspired by the legendary Cristal Baschet). The Czech sonic explorer weaves the extraordinary acoustic properties of crystal together with her voice and throbbing synthesizers to create ethereal soundscapes, hypnotic ambient pulses, and richly cinematic sonic textures. BCI's unique musical ceremony, accompanied by mesmerizing generative light and laser visuals, immerses audiences in a world where tradition and futurism become one.
Lenka hails from Northern Bohemia in the Czech Republic, a region renowned for its centuries-old glassmaking tradition. Before the conception of her Bohemian Cristal Instrument, she had already created several striking new media installations based on the sounds of local factories during their deepest decline. Following Lenka's original design, and developed with the consent and assistance of Metallic Baschet in Barcelona, her glass sound sculpture is a unique reimagining of the legendary Cristal Baschet. Crafted using Czech crystal glass, it is the only instrument of its kind in the world, with no existing replicas. Its distinctive sonic character ranges from delicate, shimmering harmonics to remarkably rich bass and sub-bass frequencies, giving it a naturally cinematic sound. With BCI, Lenka introduces an entirely new sonic adventure, yet one deeply connected to her local heritage.
Based between Los Angeles and Europe, Lenka Morávková has a compelling background as an electronic music producer (MY NAME IS ANN) and researcher. She was a Visiting Researcher at UCLA's Department of Music and spent two years pursuing doctoral studies at UC Riverside's Department of Music, exploring ethnomusicology and digital composition.
With her Bohemian Cristal Instrument, she has gained substantial international recognition. She has delivered a TEDx talk, performed at the prestigious The Broad Museum in Los Angeles alongside Grammy-nominated singer Bora Yoon, and a spontaneous performance filmed in California's blooming desert went viral, reaching more than 2 million views.
In 2017, she embarked on her first European tour, including a one-off collaboration with William Close and The Earth Harp Collective (Guinness World Records, America's Got Talent) as one of the headliners at Colours of Ostrava, performing on the main stage for 5,000 people. Other highlights include Eurosonic Noorderslag 2019 in the Netherlands, one of Europe's leading showcase festivals, Summit LA, a gathering of leading innovators and creatives, and Lightning in a Bottle festival in California in 2023.
In 2018, she debuted with the EP UNICODE and introduced an immersive light and laser show for her concerts, which she has continued to develop ever since. Following an artist residency in June 2024, she transformed the experience into a generative audiovisual performance, where the sounds of her instrument are translated into dynamic laser visuals in real time.
With BCI, Lenka has also captured the attention of alternative and Hollywood film composers. The distinctive sound of her instrument can be heard in DreamWorks' Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, with music by Grammy-winning composer Stephanie Economou, and in the Paramount+ series Halo, working with composer Bear McCreary. BCI recordings have also appeared in trailers for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and The Bikeriders, on the album LUME by Hollywood composer Jeff Rona, and in projects by Jonathan Snipes (Clipping.) for Trespassers, Benjamin Wynn (Deru) for Impulse, and Michael Choi for AI Her, among others.
Lenka also collaborated with New York-based Heavy Duty Projects, recording an extensive collection of original processed and unprocessed Bohemian Cristal Instrument sounds for film and television synchronization. Her experience extends to orchestral recording, including a featured soloist performance alongside a symphony orchestra for composer Michael Choi's Red November.
In March 2022, BCI released the single and video EVAPORA, featuring London-based film composer Drum & Lace. In June 2024, BCI followed with NEW NATURE, accompanied by a captivating cinematic teaser with VFX crafted by Metalvx — the studio behind Grimes' 3D visuals at Coachella 2024.
The single NEW NATURE marks the beginning of a new chapter, leading toward BCI's forthcoming debut full-length album and an ambitious immersive XR world, currently developed under the working title New Nature. Expanding the instrument's sonic universe into experimental moving images and extended reality, this evolving project explores new ways of experiencing music beyond the physical stage, where the acoustic world of Czech crystal meets the possibilities of digital art.
Beyond her performances, Lenka is frequently invited to speak at music, art, and technology events. Her interdisciplinary work has been presented in international new media contexts, including ISEA Paris 2023. She has also represented the Czech Republic as a delegate at international music industry events such as Most Wanted: Music, Reeperbahn Festival, Waves Vienna, All About Music India, and MaMA Festival.
In 2026, her audiovisual work received an award at the Chengdu International Digital Light Art Festival in China, and she was selected for the Emerging Producers of Europe program at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
From the ancient art of Czech glassmaking to contemporary sound art and immersive digital worlds, Bohemian Cristal Instrument continues to explore the fascinating space where nature and technology, tradition and futurism, become one.
"To me, BCI (they/them) is not an instrument but a post-human genderless entity with its own vibrant agency. By their simple existence, they represent a transformative extension of Czech glassmaking traditions into both physical and sonic realms. In our collaboration, I strive to honor BCI's natural sound tendencies and moods, acting as a mediator between the instrument and the audience rather than imposing my will. Inspired by Roland Barthes’ concept of the ‘Death of the Author,’ I relinquish my composer’s ego, control, and authority, allowing BCI to resonate freely within this world and beyond, connecting deeply with those who encounter it,” shares Lenka Morávková about her unique relationship with the Bohemian Cristal Instrument.
